Ghaghidih residents demand toilet instead of Panchayat Mandap

Jamshedpur: Members of Sampurna Ghaghidih Vikas Samiti put up a demonstration before the office of the deputy commissioner of East Singhbhum on Monday to demand construction of toilets in the five panchayats of Ghagiih.

Leading the demonstrators, the outfit leaders Chhotrai Murmu and Malti Murmu alleged that toilets were not constructed in the five panchayats of Ghaghidih despite six years of the Panchayati Raj machinery becoming effective. They said that no survey had been conducted till date in the five panchayats for the construction of toilets. In such a situation, the slogan of Swachh Bharat itself seems far from being true, the leaders said.

“The Mukhiya of the panchayat is out to construct a panchayat mandap notwithstanding the fact that still many women have to go out of their households in the absence of toilets. We demand that the Mukhiya should first construct toilets before going ahead with the panchayat mandap construction work so that women do not have to face embarrassment,” said Chhotrai Murmu.

Murmu alleged that the panchayat mandap in Ghaghidih was going to be built through ‘fake’ Gram Sabha meetings. He said there is not a single public toilet in the five panchayats till date. He further alleged that government funds were misappropriated earlier in the name of panchayat mandap construction.
