Jamshedpur: Security of the Ghaghidih Central Jail will get a boost shortly as the state prison authority is all set to install 4-G jammers in the central jail. A team of engineers from Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) has recently carried a survey of the central jail for installing the 4-G jammers.
Superintendent, Ghaghidih Central Jail, Satyendra Prasad Chaudhury informed that a five-member team of engineers from BEL, a government undertaking, visited the central jail and carried out the survey last week.
” We are looking forward to enhance security at the jail premises. The team has identified the strategic locations for fixing the jammers. However, they have not disclosed as to how many of the gadgets will be installed and where. The engineers surveyed the central prison and is expected to submit its report with the state prison authority at Ranchi shortly,” said Chaudhury.
The superintendent said there will be installed more than one jammers as the sprawling central jail is spread across 20 acres of land. He said the 4-G jammers will be installed by the end of November.
An official of Ghaghidih jail said that although the jails are equipped with only three 2G jammers, the instruments meant to block relay of signals to the mobile phones have not served the purpose with prisoners switching to 4G phones. The department is serious about installing the devices at the back of feedback from jail staff suggesting that convicts and under trials take advantage of the absence of a foolproof system for blocking mobile phone signals.
Spread over 20 acres of land, the Ghaghidih Central Jail has a prisoners’ capacity of 1,447. Presently, the central jail has 16 CCTV cameras out of which only four are operational whereas the rest 12 have gone out of order due to poor maintenance. There have been frequent clashes between undertrial prisoners in the jail. Gangs owing allegiance to gangster Paramjeet Singh and Akhilesh Singh battled inside the jail on March 20, 2008. While Paramjeet was shot dead, another convict belonging to the rival group was lynched.
