Jamshedpur: Heaps of garbage piling up across Mango Municipal Corporation in East Singhbhum district have turned into a serious public health and sanitation crisis. Streets, neighborhoods, and main roads are plagued by filth and stench, leaving residents distressed and unable to move freely. The deteriorating conditions have forced sick patients to avoid hospitals, children to stay away from schools, and elderly residents and women to halt their daily walks.
The garbage disposal issue has intensified over the past several days, prompting former minister and Congress leader Banna Gupta to write to the Chief Minister on Thursday, urging immediate action.
In his letter, Gupta highlighted the alarming consequences of uncollected garbage. “The stench and filth have disrupted daily life, increasing the risk of infectious diseases. The situation worsened due to the unplanned actions of Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Rai, who wrote to the NGT without offering alternative garbage disposal solutions,” Gupta alleged.
He criticized Rai’s decision to halt garbage dumping, describing it as a “childish act” that has left the people of Mango and even those in Sonari to grapple with foul odors and unhygienic conditions.
Gupta warned of the impending impact on upcoming festivals such as Christmas, New Year, Tusu, and Makar Sankranti, as well as children’s exams. “If garbage collection and disposal are not resumed promptly, the health of children and the elderly will be severely affected, and the festive spirit dampened,” he cautioned.
The former minister appealed to the Chief Minister to intervene and resolve the crisis swiftly. Residents of Mango are anxiously awaiting relief as garbage continues to pile up, turning the issue into a potential health emergency.
