Cops probing his local links, security beefed up at Ghaghidih Central Jail
Jamshedpur, Oct. 12: After arresting gangster Akhilesh Singh, the district police are gearing up to bring him to Jamshedpur on a transit remand. At present, Akhilesh is being treated at a hospital in Gurugram. He was arrested yesterday following an encounter in which he sustained bullet injuries in his both legs.
City police are also likely to apply for a production warrant against Akhilesh in the Jamshedpur Court. Akhilesh and his wife may be produced in a case lodged with the Birsanagar police station. The two are accused of acquiring property by changing their names and committing forgery in the case lodged on the complaint of DSP Animesh Naithani.
Notably, the arrest of Akhilesh Singh had become a challenge for the Jamshedpur police and district administration. District police had declared a reward of Rs 5 lakh for arresting the fugitive. Son of Chandragupt Singh, former general secretary of Jharkhand Police Association, Akhilesh had set up a wide network of extortionists and shooters, police officials here said.
Recently, a special task force (STF) of East Singhbhum district police, which was set up to nab the gangster had succeeded in nabbing one of his close associates. On the information divulged by the associate, the police spread their net across Haryana, where Akhilesh was in hiding, and was eventually nabbed. Cops seized several mobile phones from Akhilesh and his wife. The names saved in the phones bore just the alphabets A, B, C and D. Cops have reportedly got 12 such numbers from the phone. They are likely to identify people from Jamshedpur who talked to Akhilesh while he was absconding.
Akhilesh stepped into the crime world by abducting the lubricant merchant late Om PrakashKabra on July 21, 2001. After his name figured in the Kabra abduction case, he had surrendered in the court on August 6, 2001. He fled the judicial custody on February 18, 2002. He was arrested from Varanasi on October 7, 2004. On September 2, 2007, he was granted a parole for attending his ailing mother.
A police official said the police department had a clear message for criminals that no one can become rich by running a racket of extortion. He said that several close associates who used to help Akhilesh in perpetrating the extortion plans and running the racket have already been taken into custody for interrogation.
The gangster reportedly possesses more than 20 such heavy vehicles and luxury cars which ply in Kolkata and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, police said.
Police sources revealed that Akhilesh had tied the knot with a girl, Garima Singh, who hails from Lucknow. The gangster also bought a flat costing Rs 1 crore at Dwarka in New Delhi. Police officials are verifying facts regarding the actual purchaser of the flat so that steps could be initiated to seize the property. Cops suspect that Akhilesh had purchased properties in Rajasthan. A team would soon be sent to Rajasthan. They have also seized several documents from a bag belonging to the gangster.
Meanwhile, security of Ghaghidih Central Jail has been tightened in view of the expected arrival of Akhilesh Singh on a transit remand to Jamshedpur. Sources said that the jail authorities were prompted to further tighten security as there is a probability of a gangwar between members of Akhilesh Singh gang and Paramjeet Singh gang, who are lodged in the jail.
