Gang rape of Jamshedpur girl: Police arrest 12 youths, car, cellphone recovered

Jamshedpur: In a major breakthrough the police solved sensational incident of gang rape of a minor girl on Dobo-Kanderbera road at Kapali in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district. Police have arrested a dozen youths involved in the crime.

Those arrested were identified as Birendra Mahali, Mahadev Kumhar, Pintu Singh, Ramesh Kumar, Brindavan Kumhar alias Sadhu, Rajesh Singh, Suken Singh Sardar, Maheswar Singh Sardar, Badrinath Singh Sardar, Sanyasi Das, Parsuram Mahali and Gunadhar Mahali, all between the age group of 20  to 27 years and residents of Kapali TOP area.

The police have seized a car, a cellphone, Rs 2,000 that the accused snatched from the victim’s friend and a slipper.

The victim, who is a resident of Jugsalai had in an FIR lodged with the Kapali thana out-post (TOP) alleged three persons to have raped her in a jungle, the police however maintained that the rape angle has not yet been confirmed in the medical examination report.

Seraikela-Kharsawan superintendent of police Karthik S said that the girl had gone for a ride with her friend Harsheet Singh in an SUV in the night of August 29.

” As per our probe the victim and her friend had first gone to Domuhani bridge and had subsequently proceeded toward NH-33 by riding through Dobo-Kanderbera road.  But in the middle of the road, their SUV got out of order, leading Harsheet to try to mend it by getting it parked on the road side.  In the meantime, four local youths were returning home on foot having taken their dinner at a hotel from Kanderbera, but found the youth and the girl in an SUV, they swooped over Harsheet and snatched Rs 2,000 from him.  The four had subsequently dragged the girl out of the SUV and took her toward a jungle along the Purisili village,” said the SP.

Karthik said hearing the commotion, eight more youths who were returning home in two-wheelers joined those who were taking the girl toward the jungle where three of them had allegedly raped the girl.

“After Harsheet had spread the message about the abduction of the girl, Bistupur thana OC, Rajesh Prakash Sinha rushed to the spot.  Soon the Seraikela-Kharsawan police had also joined the Jamshedpur police in the search of the girl. Subsequently, apprehending trouble from the police, some of the accused asked the victim about her residential address. Then they somehow managed to escape with the girl from the jungle and arranged a car by which they dropped the girl by riding through Tata-Kandra Road near Tatanagar sation,” said the senior police officer.
