Jamshedpur: Former MP of Jamshedpur Dr Ajoy Kumar was appointed spokesperson of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Friday.
He had joined Congress last month after quitting Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) following his defeat in the Lok Sabha elections this year.
“Dr Ajoy Kumar has been added to the list of existing spokespersons,” AICC general secretary Ajay Maken said in a statement today.
Kumar was a doctor before joining the Indian Police Service. He served as SP in Jamshedpur from 1994 to 1996. His police career was remarkable as his popularity grew in the city for dealing strictly with organized crime.
After quitting IPS, he served briefly in Tata Motors and other companies. Much later, he joined Babulal Marandi’s JVM and was elected MP in the Parliamentary by-election in the year 2011. Congress MLA from Jamshedpur West Banna Gupta had also contested the election.
Dr Ajoy Kumar had recently said that he would be working to unite secular forces in Jharkhand against the BJP. He faced his first electoral defeat in the hands of BJP’s Vidyut Varan Mahato.
Earlier, speculations were rife that Kumar could be nominated from Rajya Sabha from his home state Karnataka as he hails from Bangalore.
