Forest department to install Aniders to keep elephants off farm lands in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum

Chaibasa, Oct 16: To reduce the incidences of human-elephant conflicts and prevent loss of crop and property due to elephants, the Forest Department has installed Animal Intrusion Detection and Repellent System (ANIDERS), a smart system that helps officials monitor the situation in real time and also scares away the elephants, on a pilot basis in Saranda Forest Area.

In the first phase, 6 passive Aniders have been installed in Nuiya village of Gua forest area and 2 active Aniders in Saranda forest area. With the installation of the device, damage to crops and property will be prevented to a great extent. As and when herd of elephants moves from forest to village, the jumbo hooter of the device will start ringing and the people of the village will be on alert. Apart from this, special equipment connected to infrared will also be installed in the elephant affected area, which will prevent elephants from entering the village.

Saranda Divisional Forest Officer Chandramouli Prasad Sinha informed that this technology is being used for the first time as a pilot project in the areas of forest division. Due to which information about the arrival of elephants will be received and the forest department will be able to keep a watch on them. He informed that Tata Steel Long Products Limited will bear the cost of this project under the Wildlife Management Plan and the project has been approved by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests-cum- Wildlife Warden-Ranchi, Government of Jharkhand.

He said that in the first phase, Aniders would be installed in 18 villages affected by elephants and if result is better, the device would be installed at other places too. Forest Officer further said that the device is being installed Kyari Innovations Pvt. Ltd. of Ghaziabad and the company will maintain the device for the next seven years. Six active infrared sensors and six passive infrared sensors will also be installed in each village. The total cost of will come up to Rs 47 lakh.
