Food Safety Shock in Jamshedpur: Samples from 12 Popular Hotels and Food Outlets Fail Quality Tests  

Jamshedpur: Residents who believe that food served at premium hotels, branded restaurants and well-known food outlets is always safe may need to think again. A recent inspection conducted by the East Singhbhum Food Safety Department has revealed serious lapses in food quality at several reputed establishments across Jamshedpur and adjoining areas.

Laboratory reports of food samples collected during inspections a few months ago have found that samples from 12 prominent hotels, restaurants and food outlets either failed to meet prescribed quality standards or were found to be adulterated. Following the findings, the department has issued show-cause notices to all the establishments concerned and has initiated the legal process for further action.

Samples Found Substandard and Adulterated

According to the Food Safety Department, the laboratory examination revealed a range of violations. While some food items were declared substandard, indicating that they did not meet the prescribed quality parameters, others were found to be adulterated, posing potential risks to consumer health.

Among the products that failed the tests were pizza cheese spread, paneer, chilli sauce, chilli powder, black pepper powder, roasted gram, laddus, basmati rice and other food items commonly consumed by the public.

Food Inspector Warns of Zero Tolerance

Food Inspector Sanjay Kumar said the department is committed to protecting public health and will adopt a zero-tolerance policy against food adulteration and poor-quality food products.

He said food samples are being collected regularly from restaurants, hotels, sweet shops and retail outlets across the district for laboratory testing. He also confirmed that a notice has been served to SIL Food India Private Limited, Pune, regarding one of the failed samples.

“The health of consumers cannot be compromised. Strict legal action will be taken wherever food safety standards are violated,” the official said.

Court Cases Likely After Legal Formalities

Officials said notices have already been issued to all the establishments concerned, directing them to submit their explanations within the stipulated period. After examining their responses and completing the mandatory legal procedures, the department will initiate prosecution under the Food Safety and Standards Act against those found guilty.

Depending on the nature of the violations, the accused establishments could face penalties, prosecution and other action as provided under the law.

Consumers Asked to Report Suspicious Food

The Food Safety Department has appealed to residents to remain vigilant while purchasing or consuming food from hotels, restaurants and shops. Citizens have been urged to immediately inform the department if they suspect food adulteration or poor-quality products so that samples can be collected promptly and necessary action initiated.

Officials said continuous surveillance and regular inspections will continue to ensure that food served to the public is safe, hygienic and compliant with prescribed standards.
