Jamshedpur, Aug 2: The district administration of East Singhbhum is on high alert following continuous heavy rains in the region for the past three days. The Kharkai river, which flows through the district, has seen a steady rise in water level, approaching the danger mark. In response to the situation, Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri has issued urgent instructions to all Block Development Officers (BDOs), Circle Officers (COs), and municipal officials to take necessary precautionary measures.
The Kharkai River is flowing above the danger mark (129 meters) on Adityapur Bridge site. The water level at Kharkai is 129.40 m at 6 pm on Wednesday.
Subarnarekha River was flowing at 118.620 metres in Jamshedpur against the danger level of 121.5 metres at Mango Bridge Site (6 pm).
The district authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are actively engaged in disseminating necessary information to safeguard the residents.

Thankfully, there have been no reported casualties or damage to property in the coastal areas near the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers that pass through the city of Jamshedpur. To ensure the safety of the residents, Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri has directed constant public announcements through microphones to alert people residing in the coastal regions, advising them to refrain from approaching the river banks.

In preparation for any emergency situation, the district administration has taken preventive measures by identifying shelter homes where people from coastal areas can be relocated when the river water enters the submergence zone. Additionally, the administration has arranged for life-saving jackets, boats, and medical kits to be readily available, ensuring a swift response to any potential crisis.

The communities residing in the coastal areas of Kadma, Bagbeda, Bhuinyadih, Kalyannagar, Shastrinagar, Mango, Jugsalai, among others, have been urged to remain vigilant during this critical period. Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri has emphasized the paramount importance of prioritizing the safety of life and property.

The district administration makes a special appeal to all residents to adhere to the guidelines provided by the authorities in order to mitigate risks and ensure the wellbeing of the community. Taking proactive measures, Tata Steel subsidiary JUSCO has confirmed its preparedness for any potential flood situation by conducting thorough checks on all flood-related components, including the sluice gates of Dimna Lake.

The low-lying areas of Kalikanagar, Daiguttu, Haddi Godam, Gaur Bustee, Shastrinagar, Bhuiyandih, Kapali, and Ghouse Nagar are particularly at risk of getting inundated in the event of flash floods. The district administration and related agencies remain vigilant and ready to respond effectively to any escalation in the situation.

The authorities have been actively identifying suitable shelter homes in safer, elevated areas, encouraging people to relocate when the water levels rise in rivers Subarnarekha and Kharkai. Additionally, an adequate supply of life-saving jackets, boats, and medical kits is being prepared to address any emergency situations.
