Jamshedpur : Atleast five police personnel were injured after locals turned violent and pelted stones at Sonari police station in Jamshedpur on Wednesday. The slum dwellers were protesting arresting a youth on charges of mobile theft on Tuesday night, police said.
The attackers, all belonging to 15 to 25 years age-group pelted stones at the policemen posted at the police station located in the densely-populated area of the city. Several women too were involved in the act.
In the attack, which continued for an hour, five policemen sustained injuries. The injured cops have been admitted to MGM Medical College and Hospital emergency for treatment of their injuries.
Deputy superintendent of police (headquarters-II) Jagat Prasad said that the action against a miscreant for his alleged involvement in a snatching incident yesterday led the slum dwellers attacked the police station.
“After a complaint of snatching cell-phone and cash from a private construction company staff yesterday was lodged, one of the staff posted at Marine Drive Thana Out-post had caught the accused, who was identified as Raju.
But in the evening, a strong mob of men and women stormed the TOP and forcibly set Raju free from the custody of the Sonari TOP. During this act, the bustee dwellers had assaulted one of the constables on duty,” recollected the DSP.
According to Prasad, the attackers had assaulted the policemen in random, and went on damaging the vehicles and also assaulted the policemen on civil duty.
Officer-in-charge, Sonari police station, Sanjiv Kumar said that they have identified those who attacked the police station and that they would take stern action against the accused.
In view of the situation, additional forces were deployed to maintain law and order and chase away the mob.
