Jamshedpur: In a major enforcement drive to strengthen road safety and curb traffic violations, the East Singhbhum Transport Department conducted a special vehicle-checking drive on National Highway-33 between Jamshedpur and Bahragora. The drive was carried out following the directions of Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarthi.
The primary focus of the operation was to check overloading in passenger vehicles, which authorities said remains one of the leading causes of road accidents in the region. The enforcement team, led by District Motor Vehicle Inspector Suraj Hembrom, inspected more than 40 buses, magic vans, and other commercial vehicles during the drive.
Out of the vehicles checked, 15 were found violating norms by carrying passengers beyond the permitted capacity. Consequently, fines amounting to Rs 2.45 lakh were imposed on the erring vehicle owners for flouting traffic and safety regulations.
In addition to checking overloading, the team also verified vehicle fitness certificates, insurance documents, pollution under control (PUC) certificates and route permits. The District MVI warned drivers that overloading is not only a serious violation of traffic rules but also poses a grave risk to the lives of passengers and other road users.
He further stated that strict legal action will continue against violators and that surprise inspections will be conducted regularly across the district to ensure compliance with transport and safety norms.
During the drive, the Transport Department also issued a set of safety guidelines to vehicle operators, urging them to strictly adhere to permit conditions, carry all valid documents, ensure the use of seat belts in four-wheelers and helmets for both rider and pillion on two-wheelers, follow prescribed speed limits, and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol.
Officials also informed that Road Safety Month is being observed across the district from January 1 to January 31, 2026, to promote safe road behaviour and reduce road accidents.
Deputy Commissioner’s Appeal
Appealing to the public, Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarthi urged citizens to strictly follow traffic rules, avoid overspeeding and drunken driving, use helmets and seat belts without fail, and refrain from using mobile phones while driving. He emphasised responsible driving, lane discipline, and respect for traffic signals and road signs.
The Deputy Commissioner noted that most road accidents are preventable and even small positive changes in driving behaviour can help save precious lives. Through collective efforts and public participation, the district administration aims to significantly reduce road accidents, injuries, and fatalities in East Singhbhum.
