Jamshedpur: An unusual rise in minimum temperatures was recorded across the state on Monday, attributed to the formation of dense clouds resulting from the impact of Cyclone Fengal. This weather anomaly has surprised residents and experts alike, as the chill of winter gave way to relatively warmer nights.
Ranchi, the state capital, reported a minimum temperature of 15.4 degrees Celsius, a noticeable increase from seasonal averages. Similarly, Jamshedpur experienced a minimum temperature of 18.8 degrees Celsius, marking one of the highest night temperatures recorded this season.
In Daltonganj, the mercury settled at 13.3 degrees Celsius, while Bokaro witnessed a minimum of 14.2 degrees Celsius. Chaibasa, located in the neighbouring West Singhbhum district, reported a minimum temperature of 14.4 degrees Celsius, continuing the trend of warmer-than-usual nights.
The warm spell was not confined to these cities. Data from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) revealed an upward trend in minimum temperatures across other districts, including Deoghar, Dhanbad, Garhwa, Giridih, Hazaribagh, Gumla, Khunti, Lohardaga, and Pakur. The pattern indicates the widespread influence of Cyclone Fengal’s cloud cover, which prevents the usual nocturnal cooling by trapping heat radiating from the Earth’s surface.
Weathermen at IMD’s Ranchi Meteorological Centre explained the phenomenon, attributing the abrupt temperature rise to the dense cloud formation associated with the cyclone’s peripheral effects. “The cloud cover acts like a blanket, restricting heat loss and leading to higher minimum temperatures at night,” said a senior meteorologist.
While the temporary spike in temperatures has offered some respite from the biting cold, it is expected to be short-lived. According to IMD officials, the minimum temperatures are likely to dip again after the next 48 hours as Cyclone Fengal’s influence wanes and skies clear up. “Once the cloud cover dissipates, we anticipate a return to typical winter conditions,” added the meteorologist.
Residents have been advised to stay updated on weather forecasts as fluctuating temperatures could impact agricultural activities and winter crops. The state administration has also urged citizens to remain cautious of potential weather-induced health risks.
The abrupt temperature change serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between regional weather systems and larger climatic phenomena. Cyclone Fengal, though distant, has managed to make its mark on the state’s weather, showcasing the interconnected nature of atmospheric patterns. As the state braces for a return to colder conditions, experts continue to monitor the cyclone’s evolving trajectory and its residual impact on local weather.
