Jamshedpur, March 5: The Jugsalai police have arrested externed criminal Manish Singh, who was allegedly involved in multiple criminal cases, including extortion targeting local traders.
He was apprehended from Golden Leaf Resort in a neighbouring district following sustained surveillance and intelligence inputs.
Police sources said Singh had been demanding protection money from businessmen in the Jugsalai area and was actively engaged in extortion.
A few days earlier, two of his associates were arrested with a pistol, intensifying the crackdown against his network.
In a related operation, seven of his accomplices were also taken into custody from the Golmuri police station area.
Given the gravity of the allegations, his activities were being closely monitored at the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) level.
Amid criticism over delays in his arrest, the SSP suspended Jugsalai police station in-charge Baijnath Kumar two days ago. Gulam Rabbani was appointed as the new officer-in-charge and assumed duty on Tuesday.
Within 24 hours of taking charge, the new station head led the operation that resulted in Singh’s arrest.
Police officials said further action will be taken based on interrogation of the accused. Investigations are ongoing to determine his role in extortion and other criminal activities.
