Jamshedpur: In a special operation launched against the CPI-Maoists in Jharkhand’s Saranda, the joint security forces have recovered explosives in large numbers, enough to wipe out an entire platoon.
West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashutosh Shekhar confirmed the recovery of the explosives.
According to information, an anti-insurgency operation by joint security forces including West Singhbhum Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was launched in Porahat forest area of Saranda after intelligence inputs.
The security forces had learnt that senior Maoist leaders were camping in forested area near Serengdanga village under Toklo police station.
The security forces after search operation for at least three days on Tuesday neutralised a Naxal camp near Serengdanga village and recovered explosives, largely can-bombs.
“Our forces recovered 12 improvised explosive devices (IED) weighing 2 kilograms each and nine weighing one kilograms each and detonators,” said Shekhar.
The SP further added that the IEDs planted by the Maoists were enough to wipe out at least a platoon of security forces.
The IPS officer added that a 10 feet crater was formed when the IEDs were defused together.
A bomb expert not willing to be named said, “Seeing the recovery, the IEDs were planted in series. If the Maoists had successfully triggered the can-bombs then our forces would had suffered a major setback.”
