Excise cut on fuel offers relief amid global turbulence : CAIT

Jamshedpur, April 27: Welcoming the Centre’s decision to slash special excise duty on petrol and diesel, Suresh Sonthalia, National Joint General Secretary of the Confederation of All India Traders ( CAIT) , termed the move a “timely and people-centric intervention” amid ongoing global economic uncertainty.
Sonthalia said the decision, taken under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reflects a forward-looking approach aimed at cushioning citizens from the ripple effects of rising crude oil prices in the international market. The government has reduced the special excise duty on petrol from Rs 13 to Rs 3 per litre and completely removed the Rs 10 per litre duty on diesel.
He emphasized that the measure would not only ease the burden on consumers but also significantly benefit the transport and logistics sector.
“Stability in fuel prices will help curb rising transportation costs, ensuring that the overall logistics chain remains efficient and cost-effective,” he noted.
According to Sonthalia, the most immediate impact will be seen in the containment of logistics expenses, which play a critical role in determining the final prices of goods. “By keeping freight costs in check, the decision will prevent unnecessary inflation in essential commodities, directly benefiting millions of consumers across the country,” he added.
Highlighting the broader economic implications, he said the government faced a crucial choice—either allow retail prices to rise or absorb the financial burden itself. “By prioritizing public welfare, the government has chosen the latter, demonstrating sensitivity and strong governance,” he remarked.
Sonthalia further affirmed that the trading community fully supports the move and remains committed to ensuring that the benefits are passed on to end consumers without disruption in the supply chain.
He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi, stating that the decision would provide substantial relief to the common man while reinforcing economic stability in challenging times.
