Energy education programme launched

Jamshedpur : The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in association with Jusco have initiated an activity-oriented energy education programme titled ‘Joining hands for a better world’.

The programme will be implemented in 10 schools in Jamshedpur and Adityapur, and will target to sensitise 3000 students as well as teachers and parents on issues related to energy conservation.

This six-month long project will inspire students of classes 6-8 to take up activities leading to real-time reduction of energy consumption in their schools and homes.

Various non-formal ways of teaching and learning will be applied through workshops, competitions for children, teachers’ training programmes, energy audit, community radio programmes, etc.

As part of the introductory phase, school level knowledge workshops are being conducted in the project schools. Such workshops have been conducted at Little Flower School on October 28, and at GH Tarapore School and Central Public School on October 29, and at DAV Bistupur School and DAV NIT School on October 30. About 150 students (50 each from classes 6-8) participated in each of the workshops.

Senior representatives from Jusco were part of the workshops. The workshops started with an introduction by TERI and Jusco as well as detailed discussion about the project activities to be conducted in the forthcoming months. A technical session on the basics of energy conservation was conducted.

Movies related to the issue of energy conservation were also screened for better understanding of the issue. Further, intra school competitions were held in each school quiz for class 6, poster making for class 7 and T-shirt painting competition for class 8.

The quiz competition had an elimination round and the 10 selected participants were divided into 5 groups who got an opportunity to participate in 3 more rounds (direct questions, buzzer round and rapid fire round).

The winners of all competitions will be felicitated in a grand prize distribution ceremony to be held towards the end of the project. The schools in general, and the students in particular participated in the project activities with great joy and enthusiasm.
