Jamshedpur: In a major step towards eradicating the growing menace of illegal narcotics, the Government has strengthened its public outreach with the launch of the MANAS (Mental Health and Normalcy Augmentation System) National Narcotics Helpline Portal. The initiative, aimed at enabling citizens to take an active role in the fight against drugs, provides a dedicated 24×7 toll-free helpline—1933—where people can report any drug-related activity.
Officials said the portal has been designed as a centralised system for receiving, tracking, and acting upon drug-related complaints. It covers a wide range of offences including drug smuggling, illegal sale and purchase, unauthorised storage or manufacture of narcotics, and illicit cultivation of narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances. Once a complaint is received, it is reviewed by officers of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), who are tasked with verifying the information and taking prompt action under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
At the district level, East Singhbhum authorities are supplementing the national initiative with local channels for reporting. Residents can call the toll-free emergency number 112 or directly contact the Police Control Room at 0657-2431028 to provide information about any illegal drug trade, consumption, or transportation activities in their vicinity. Law enforcement officials have emphasised that every piece of information, no matter how small, can prove crucial in dismantling larger drug networks.
District police sources have also pointed out that drug abuse not only fuels crime but also damages the social fabric, affecting youth, public health, and community safety. “We need public cooperation to choke the supply chain. The drug trade thrives in secrecy, and only vigilant citizens can help bring it to light,” said an officer involved in anti-narcotics operations.
Authorities have assured that the identity of all informants will be strictly protected, and credible leads will be acted upon without delay. The police have also appealed to citizens to be aware of early warning signs of drug abuse in their communities, such as suspicious gatherings, frequent night-time activity in certain areas, or unexplained possession of cash and valuables by individuals.
Campaigns are also being planned to raise awareness among students, parents, and community leaders about the dangers of drug abuse, legal consequences for offenders, and available channels for reporting. With both enforcement and awareness moving in parallel, the administration hopes to make East Singhbhum a model district in the fight against narcotics.
