Jamshedpur: Potka MLA Sanjib Sardar raised serious concerns in the Jharkhand Assembly over the growing threat from abandoned stone mining pits across East Singhbhum and demanded immediate action to protect public safety.
Speaking during Zero Hour, Sardar described the unattended pits as a “serious public safety hazard” and pointed out that several deep and dangerous excavations remain open after mining activities have ended.
He warned that these neglected sites pose a constant risk of accidents, especially in rural and semi-urban areas of the district.
Highlighting the increased danger during the monsoon, Sardar said rainwater fills many of these pits, making them nearly invisible and more hazardous. “These water-filled craters have turned into death traps, especially for villagers and cattle,” he said.
Sardar alleged that leaseholders failed to carry out mandatory land restoration and leveling after completing mining operations, violating established norms. He said this negligence not only breaches regulations but also endangers local lives.
He urged the state government to direct authorities to immediately fill and level these pits. He stressed that timely action is essential to prevent accidents and restore safety in affected areas.
The issue has once again highlighted the need for strict enforcement of mining regulations and accountability, as concerns over environmental damage and public safety continue to rise in Jharkhand’s mineral-rich regions.
