Jamshedpur, Jan 31: The district police intensified their campaign against the illegal drug trade with another successful operation under ‘Operation Prahar’, arresting a drug peddler from Gandhi Maidan in Mango and seizing 22 pouches of brown sugar.
Acting on a specific tip-off, the Olidih police launched a swift raid at Gandhi Maidan, a location reportedly being used for the sale and purchase of narcotics.
Patamda DSP Vachandev Kujur said a special police team was formed after receiving the intelligence and strategically deployed at the spot.
As the police moved in, several youths present at the ground attempted to escape. While some managed to flee taking advantage of the darkness, the police chased and apprehended one suspect.
He was identified as Jitendra Kumar alias Jeetu, a resident of Jawaharnagar Road No. 4 in Mango.
A search of the accused led to the recovery of 22 pouches of brown sugar along with a mobile phone. Police said efforts are underway to trace and arrest the other individuals who managed to escape during the raid.
The DSP added that ‘Operation Prahar’ is being carried out across the district on the directions of the Senior Superintendent of Police to curb the growing menace of drug abuse and trafficking. Over the last two months, more than 45 drug peddlers have been arrested as part of the sustained drive.
The continued enforcement has sent shockwaves through drug networks operating in the area.
Police are now interrogating the arrested accused to identify the source of the contraband and uncover the wider network involved in the illegal trade.
