Jamshedpur: After a brief lull the district police on Tuesday resumed fresh crackdown against bikers flouting road rules at strategic locations across the steel city. In a bid to curb the mounting accidents and to enforce strictly road discipline in the city, the drive started kicked off near Jubilee Park that connects Bistupur with Sakchi, the busiest areas of the city. A number of vehicles were seized and banned air horns removed.

Traffic cops of East Singhbhum district who were deployed in other districts for the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls have returned. ” We have relaunched the drive as the traffic constables have returned. The drive will be carried out effectively,” said a traffic official.

During the drive, one of the biggest in past few years, traffic constables were deployed at strategic locations at Sakchi, Mango, Agrico, Bistupur and Golmuri for intercepting two-wheeler riders without helmets. Bikers without the safety headgear, license and number plates in the front were targetted during the crackdown that began at around 10.30 am and continued till 1.30 pm.

Around 100 bikers were caught at various points during the three-hour drive. At Sakchi near the Jubilee Park gate around 50 bikers flouting traffic norms were caught. At Bistupur , around 50 more two-wheeler riders were pulled up for violation of traffic norms.

A fine of Rs 270 was levied on two wheelers violating traffic norms like riding without helmets. Once again, violation of helmet rule dominated the list of errors committed by two-wheeler users. Many were fined for driving without possessing a helmet or driving without wearing it.

A senior traffic department officer at Sakchi said that the drive will now be carried out in regular interval. Though we were facing problems in carrying out the drive for the last two months due to lack of  constables who were away for poll duty. Now, the drive will take place almost after every alternate days simultaneously at various locations in the steel city,” he said.
