Drain Under Mango Flyover in Jamshedpur to Be Widened, Says MLA Saryu Roy After Inspection

Jamshedpur (Mail News Service): The drain being constructed beneath the Mango flyover in Jamshedpur will be widened and deepened to prevent waterlogging, Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy said on Tuesday after conducting an on-site inspection. The Road Construction Department (RCD) has agreed to reassess the drainage design and implement necessary modifications.

The MLA took up the issue following complaints from local residents who alleged that the newly built drain under the flyover was too narrow and shallow to handle rainwater discharge, raising fears of severe waterlogging during the monsoon season. Acting on these concerns, Roy inspected the site along with the Executive Engineer and other officials of the Road Construction Department.

During the inspection, Roy pointed out that localities such as New Purulia Road and Kalika Nagar already discharge rainwater through an existing drainage system, while the densely populated Deshbandhu Line area lies in between. He noted that the Deshbandhu Line faces knee-deep waterlogging every monsoon, with floodwater often entering homes and causing significant hardship to residents.

Emphasising the need for an integrated drainage solution, Roy said the existing drainage channel must be properly connected beneath the Mango flyover so that rainwater is smoothly diverted into the main drain and eventually flows into the river without obstruction.

The MLA directed engineers to measure water levels in the Deshbandhu Line, assess the total catchment area contributing runoff, and analyse maximum rainfall data from previous years. He also instructed them to study water levels at the outlet point to ensure the drain can safely carry the entire volume of rainwater.

Agreeing with the observations, the RCD Executive Engineer assured that a detailed technical assessment would be completed within two to three days. Based on the findings, the depth and width of the drain under the Mango flyover will be increased to ensure effective and long-term drainage.

Several engineers, departmental officials, and local residents were present during the inspection, expressing hope that the proposed modifications would provide lasting relief from monsoon waterlogging in the area.
