Doctors wear black badges to protest attacks on fraternity

Jamshedpur: Indian Medical Association, Jamshedpur chapter, observed a statewide token strike in protest of recent incidents of assault on doctors here on Saturday.

The doctors of all government and private hospitals, clinics and nursing homes wore black ribbons on duty to register their protest. They also staged demonstration at several places to demand protection for their fraternity.

The district general secretary of IMA Dr Mrityunjay Kumar said the doctors of the state had long been demanding Medical Protection Act in Jharkhand, but the state government has been continuously ignoring the demand, he alleged.

Kumar said the doctors were forced to come out in protest after being subjected to humiliating situations on duty across the state. In Koderma, some electricity department staff had died of electrocution.

The relatives of the deceased forced the local doctors to perform autopsy in the night itself. This is unbearable and strange.

The doctors cannot and should not be compelled to work under these weird situations and that too, in the absence of an administrative order, said Kumar.
