Jamshedpur, July 22: The Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court, Dr Ravi Ranjan launched, �Kartavya,� on May 24. The scheme is designed to help the family members of under trial prisoners, convicts and their families with provisions of legal aid, food and medicines.
�Kartavya� is an effective intervention for assisting jail inmates and their families. There are provisions in the package to provide legal aid to prisoners involved in offences that are punishable with jail terms of upto seven years.
Implemented by Jharkhand Legal Services Authority (JHALSA), �Kartavya� will cater to food, medicines and educational needs and counseling that are the immediate parameters of the family members of prisoners. This project is being implemented in East Singhbhum by District legal Services Authority (DLSA) Jamshedpur as per directives of Chairman Manoj Prasad. In order to add the effective edge to the scheme, DLSA conducted an online training session in June last for the PLVs among the jail inmates who keep the other inmates updated on their legal rights and including legal aid from DLSA. This also includes clauses regarding application for interim bail.
On Tuesday, July 21, 263 prisoners had filed bail petitions through the Ghagidih Central Jail authority and the petitions of 172 among them were granted bail. It may be mentioned here that DLSA panel lawyers have provided legal services to 238 under trial prisoners during the prevailing pandemic times.
DLSA has provided essential food requirements and medicines to families of 25 under trial prisoners as per list provided by Ghagidih Central Jail Superintendent under �Kartavya� scheme.
