Jamshedpur, Aug 28: Jamshedpur and its adjoining areas experienced a heavy downpour since evening due to the impact of a depression over the Bay of Bengal.
In Met parlance, “heavy rain” translates into 64.5mm to 124.4mm on a single day while “very heavy rain” means 124.5mm to 244.4mm in a day. “Extremely heavy rain” refers to 244.5mm or more.
Statistics show that on June 18, 2008, the day monsoon arrived in Jharkhand that year, the steel city had registered 338mm rainfall, the heaviest on a single day and the highest ever in Jamshedpur and in entire Jharkhand.
“Never before such rainfall been recorded in Jamshedpur and in any other parts of the state in the month of August,” confirmed an official of the Patna Meteorological Centre.
The depression over the north west Bay of Bengal moved north eastwards and intensified into a deep depression today. Several parts of north east Jharkhand like
Sahibganj, Dumka, Godda, Pakur and Deoghar also received moderate rainfall between 40-50 mm since last night. Weathermen said that the depression did not impact
weather condition in capital Ranchi and its adjoining districts.
He said that monsoon was active over Jharkhand. ” The deep depression is likely to weaken gradually and move north westwards,” said the official.
Both the Patna and Ranchi IMD centres extended the forecast of heavy rain in isolated pockets of Jharkhand during the next 48-hours. ” Heavy rain is expected in isolated places of north western and southern Jharkhand,” said a senior Met official at Ranchi.
The depression coupled with an active monsoon trough resulted in a shower showdown at many places since last night. Over 80 percent IMD observatories reported rain during the lst 24-hours.
A dormant monsoon has hit the active button to shower its largesse on Jharkhand.
Widespread rainfall towards the end of last week and downpour on Sunday dragged down the deficit by seven notches to 30 per cent, prompting sanguine weathermen to predict a narrower margin in days to come.
Several parts of the state, including Jamshedpur and its adjoining areas, experienced heavy rain on Sunday. The local Met office in the steel city recorded 94.4mm today. The rainfall was continuous and resulted in waterlogging at several places. Rivers Subernarekha and Kharkai are once again in spate.
The impact of low pressure was felt in Dumka, Gumla, Dhanbad, Chatra and Lohardaga. Pakur, Hazaribagh, Seraikela-Kharsawan and West Singhbhum also witnessed a good spell. But, capital Ranchi had to taste disappointment with just 1mm, though the skies remained overcast throughout the day.
An activated monsoon helped Gumla and Lohardaga ditch the deficit list. While the former recorded a surplus of 11 per cent, the latter tiptoed on the gainer list with two per cent.
