A three-storey under-construction building collapsed in Old Delhi’s Chawri Bazaar on Thursday morning. The disaster killed at least two people and injured another person.
Emergency teams rescued one survivor from the heavy rubble. Rescue officials fear that several more people remain trapped under the debris.
The fire department received an emergency call at 9:50 a.m. from Gali Sitara near the Chawri Bazaar Metro Station. Authorities immediately dispatched six fire units to the scene.
Specialized rescue vehicles and water tenders arrived quickly to initiate relief operations. Emergency workers continue to clear the debris to locate trapped victims.
The tragedy struck during a busy festive rush in the popular market area. Officials expect to release further details as rescue work progresses.
This fatal collapse follows a similar tragedy in Satya Niketan two months ago. That September collapse claimed seven lives during heavy weekend rain.
Following that earlier incident, the Supreme Court demanded affidavits on unauthorized construction compliance. The Delhi government also suspended five officials over structural violations.
Despite official scrutiny, structural failures continue to endanger lives across the national capital. A building collapse in Seemapuri killed four people on October 7.
Another illegal construction failure in Harsh Vihar killed a father and son on October 25. Authorities are investigating the cause of this latest collapse.
