DCs help sought on banks refusal to accept coins

Jamshedpur: District BJP media spokesperson Ankit Anand on Tuesday demanded intervention by the district administration in the matter related to alleged refusal to accept coins by various banks in the city.

In a letter to the deputy commissioner (DC) of East Singhbhum, Amit Kumar, Anand said the district administration should take stringent measures against the banks for violating the guidelines issued by the Reserve Bank of India. He said many account holders were being given coins at bank counters, but later the banks refused to accept the coins.

Anand said the bank authorities are refusing to accept the coins under the pretext that the coins are heavy and it is difficult to count them. As a result, the people, especially traders are facing much inconvenience. Many shopkeepers, traders and vendors are now refusing to accept coins from customers, Anand said.

The BJP leader said the bank authorities were flouting RBI guidelines and inviting severe punishment by refusing to take coins.
