Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary Goes Digital: AI Cameras and High-Tech Towers to Secure Forest Perimeter

Jamshedpur: The security framework of the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, spanning 192 square kms, is set for a complete digital overhaul. To modernize forest surveillance and ensure the safety of both wildlife and tourists, the Forest Department has drafted a ₹1 crore project.

AI-Enabled Surveillance and Strategic Watchtowers

A network of 20 new watchtowers and outposts will be established across sensitive zones and primary animal corridors. These towers will be equipped with cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras designed for high-precision monitoring. This technology will allow for the accurate tracking of animal movements, immediate identification of poachers or unauthorized intruders, and early detection of forest fires during the vulnerable summer months.

Modernizing Communication with Wireless Infrastructure

Saba Alam Ansari, DFO (Dalma) and Deputy Director of the Elephant Project, stated that the lack of modern communication often led to critical delays in information sharing. To bridge this gap, the department is procuring 100 new wireless sets. This initiative will establish a direct link between field staff, range offices, and headquarters, enabling forest guards to sound instant alerts during emergencies.

Enhancing Tourist Safety and Mitigating Conflict

With record-breaking tourist footfall and the introduction of overnight stay facilities, visitor safety has become a top priority for the department. The integration of technology is expected to provide a safer environment for those visiting the natural habitat of elephants, bears, giant squirrels, deer, and peacocks.

Beyond protection, these high-tech measures are aimed at reducing human-wildlife conflict. By receiving real-time data on the movement of elephant herds, the department can issue timely warnings to fringe villages, preventing potential casualties and crop damage. DFO Saba Alam Ansari emphasized that this investment is a significant step toward preserving Dalma’s biodiversity for future generations.
