Jamshedpur, May 26: The deep depression brewing in the Bay of Bengal has escalated into Cyclone “Remal,” posing a potential threat to West Bengal and neighboring states, including Jharkhand. While the cyclone’s impact is not expected to blanket the entire state, areas bordering West Bengal, particularly Santal Pargana and Kolhan, are likely to experience its brunt.
Meteorologists from the Ranchi-based India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipate significant effects in regions adjoining West Bengal, excluding Palamu division. On Sunday, May 26, districts such as East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, and Seraikela-Kharsawan in the Kolhan division may witness winds blowing at speeds ranging from 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. Similar conditions are forecasted for adjacent districts like Ranchi, Khunti, Ramgarh, Bokaro, and Dhanbad.

Subsequently, on Monday and Tuesday, May 27 and 28, wind speeds may range from 30 to 40 kilometers per hour in other districts, except for Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, and Latehar.
Anticipating the cyclone’s impact, Jamshedpur experienced light rainfall on Sunday morning. The IMD predicts thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds across several parts of the state from May 26th to May 31st. These weather conditions are expected to affect various districts, including Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Bokaro, Gumla, Hazaribagh, Simdega, and more.
The cyclone, expected to make landfall between Sagar Island in West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh, prompts warnings of extremely heavy rainfall in coastal West Bengal and North Odisha on May 26th and 27th. With wind speeds ranging from 110 to 120 kilometers per hour to 135 kilometers per hour, coastal areas are advised to brace for storm surges of up to 1.5 meters.

In anticipation of the cyclone’s impact, flight operations from Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport have been suspended for 21 hours, starting Sunday afternoon, due to expected strong winds and heavy rains.
