Jamshedpur, Jan 11: Cyber criminals siphoned off Rs 4.41 lakh from the account of a Mango-based resident on the pretext of mobile number verification.
According to police records, a resident of Astha Space along Dimna Road in Mango, Ashish Kumar was called by cyber criminals who sought information for verification of his mobile number and after getting information withdrew Rs 4.41 lakh from his bank account. A case was lodged by Ashish Kumar at the cyber thana in Bistupur.
The complainant has said that a message came on his mobile number that if the number is not verified then it will stop functioning from a number 9883483367 and when he called up this number the cyber criminals said that his mobile number would be verified through Airtel app and also persuaded him to download Quick Support App and asked him to pay a nominal amount of Rs 10 as charges.
Acceding to their request he arranged payment of Rs 10 through netbanking. However, in a short while he found in his netbanking that amount of Rs 4.41 lakh has been withdrawn. Police are investigating into the complaint.
Police say that under no circumstance should one disclose personal information to callers as it is strategy of cyber criminals to threaten and take up personal information on the pretext that they are from mobile phone company or from bank. Police also say that they should immediately inform if such calls come on their phone.
