Jamshedpur, May 15: In a significant update on the district’s ongoing battle against narcotics and illegal substances, the police department revealed during the Narcotics Coordination Committee (NCORD) meeting that 13 cases were registered under the NDPS Act between January and April 2025, leading to the arrest of 36 accused individuals. The operations also resulted in the seizure of large quantities of ganja, brown sugar, cough syrup, and doda.
Additionally, a proposal for preventive detention of three habitual offenders has been submitted to the Home Department under the PIT NDPS Act. In a parallel crackdown, the Railway DSP informed that 87 kilograms of ganja were seized in the last four months.
The Excise Department reported an aggressive drive against illegal liquor, with 769 cases registered and 73 people sent to jail. Enforcement teams confiscated 18,364 litres of illicitly distilled liquor, 3,45,885 kg of Java Mahua, 4,001 litres of foreign liquor, 671 litres of beer, 1,140 litres of spirit, and 5.62 litres of country liquor.
The meeting also stressed the need to take sensitive and proactive steps for the rehabilitation of drug addicts, including regular counselling, support for their families, and linking recovered individuals to self-employment and government schemes through dedicated rehabilitation centres.
To encourage public participation in this effort, citizens were urged to share information about the illegal trade, consumption, and transportation of drugs by calling the toll-free number 112 or the Police Control Room at 0657-2431028.
The NCORD meeting was chaired by District Magistrate-cum-Deputy Commissioner Ananya Mittal at the Collectorate Auditorium, Jamshedpur. It was attended by Senior Superintendent of Police Kishore Kaushal, City SP Kumar Shivashish, and other senior officials from various departments including education, social welfare, excise, and health.
During the meeting, the District Magistrate directed that police station-wise workshops be organized with principals of all private schools, with participation from the District Legal Services Authority (DALSA). These workshops aim to spread awareness among students and staff about the dangers of drug abuse.
Furthermore, Prahari Clubs already formed in schools have been instructed to conduct regular meetings to sensitize students and create a vigilant and informed environment within campuses.
The Senior Superintendent of Police instructed the Drug Inspector to submit monthly reports on the sale and stock of narcotic drugs in all medical shops. Medical stores were also directed to prominently display the list of banned narcotics to prevent unauthorized sales.
The District Agriculture Officer was tasked with investigating and reporting on suspected illegal cultivation areas through Block Technical Managers (BTMs). The administration also emphasized the need for tracking interstate and inter-district drug trafficking routes and executing targeted enforcement operations.
The meeting saw the participation of DCLR Gautam Kumar, District Public Relations Officer Panchanan Oraon, DSP Bhola Prasad, District Social Welfare Officer, DSE, DEO, Assistant Municipal Commissioners from all three civic bodies, Drug Inspector, and representatives from DALSA and other concerned departments.
