Crackdown on cars with tinted glasses, 77 four-wheeler owners fined

Jamshedpur, July 18: Rise in crime has prompted Jamshedpur administration to step up security measures. The police are cracking down on vehicles with tinted glasses and penalizing owners.

On the first day of the special drive the crackdowns were carried out at Sakchi, Bistupur and Jugsalai
Officials of Traffic police said that about 77 four-wheeler owners were fined and had their tinted films stripped off from their windows.

“In all 77 four wheelers including three buses were caught in the drive and had their tinted films stripped off. The drive which would continue till further order from the district administration is based on the Supreme Court order prohibiting use of tinted films in vehicles,” he said.

As per the Supreme Court order issued in May visual light transmission or VLT should be at least 70 percent for front and rear screens and 50 percent for the side windows while it straightway banned use of black films on windows. The Supreme Court order was based on the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.

The deputy superintendent of police (traffic) Vivekanand Thakur said that in addition to the special drive against use of tinted films on windows the routine drive against traffic violations by two wheelers would also continue simultaneously.

Many people in the city use tinted glasses in their vehicles and SUVs without dark glasses are rare here. “Those who buy SUVs are generally well-connected people and thus we avoid checking them.

In many cases, owner of a vehicle uses flag of a certain political party to avoid the cops,” said a policeman, who did not wish to be named.

“We have received instructions on Thursday and all traffic posts have been alerted. Cops at points in the city where there are no posts have also been asked to keep vigil,” said an officer.
