Court orders release of seized firearm in case against JMM leader Babban Rai

Jamshedpur: The Court of Sushila Soren, First Class Nayak Magistrate, has ordered the release of the firearm seized from senior Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Babban Rai. The court’s decision came after a hearing today, during which legal arguments were presented by Advocate Sudhir Kumar Pappu and Babita Jain on behalf of Babban Rai.

The case was registered following a complaint filed by Sonari Police, based on a written application by Kirti Kumar, a Junior Engineer of the Water Resources Department. The complaint alleged that Babban Rai was present with his licensed firearm at a political event attended by MP Pappu Yadav in Sonari North Layout during the assembly elections on November 5, 2024.

Sonari Police seized Rai’s firearm as part of their investigation into the matter. Following today’s hearing, the court ruled that the firearm be released to the Sonari Police, pending further legal review.

The case has sparked political discussions in the region, given Rai’s senior position within JMM. While his legal representatives maintain that he was not in violation of any laws, the matter has raised concerns about firearm possession during election periods. Authorities continue to review the situation to ensure compliance with election-related regulations.
