Contract Worker Killed in Rail Logistics Accident at Tata Steel’s West Marshalling Yard

Jamshedpur, June 16: A tragic accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday at Tata Steel’s West Marshalling Yard in Jamshedpur, claiming the life of a contract worker engaged in rail logistics operations. The deceased has been identified as 34-year-old Sunil Kumar Singh, a ground crew member employed under M/s RITES Ltd.

According to preliminary reports, the incident took place at around 1:35 am on Track No. 5 during a shunting operation. A locomotive (No. 145) operated by M/s RITES was pushing 11 captive wagons on Line No. 5, intending to couple them with four empty box wagons already stationed on the same track. During the operation, Sunil Kumar Singh was found lying under the wheels of a wagon.

The West Plant First Aid doctor promptly reached the site and escorted him to Tata Main Hospital (TMH), where he was declared brought dead. All concerned agencies were immediately informed following the incident.

Tata Steel, in an official statement, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and confirmed that the fatal accident occurred under inbound logistics operations. “We are deeply saddened to inform that a fatal accident has taken place involving a vendor employee. Other details are awaited,” the statement read.

The company has assured that an investigation is underway, and all safety protocols are being reviewed to prevent such incidents in the future.
