New Delhi (IANS): The Congress party on Tuesday signalled that a formal constitutional challenge to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is on the horizon. Addressing growing speculation, the party stated that while a no-confidence motion is a serious constitutional step, any such move will be announced publicly only once the formal notice is submitted.
Speculation Meets Constitutional Strategy
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari refused to engage in hearsay but pointedly did not rule out the move. “As soon as a no-confidence motion is presented, we will announce it publicly. Until it is formally announced, I cannot respond to speculations,” Tiwari stated.
However, high-level sources within the INDIA bloc indicate that the decision is all but finalized. The notice is expected to be submitted to the Secretary-General of the Lok Sabha shortly, marking a rare and aggressive escalation in parliamentary warfare.
The Flashpoints: Why Now?
The opposition’s grievances against the Chair have reached a breaking point, cited across several key issues:
- Silencing the LoP: The primary trigger remains the denial of floor time to Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat alleged, “The fear is of the statements to be made by Rahul Gandhi. The intention is not to allow him to speak.”
- Suspension of MPs: The recent suspension of eight opposition members has been viewed by the INDIA bloc as an attempt to “muzzle the voice of the people.”
- Allegations of Bias: The opposition has accused the Speaker of failing to act against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey for remarks against former Prime Ministers, while simultaneously allowing “unsubstantiated” charges to be leveled against women Congress MPs.
“Fairness, Not Animosity”
The Congress maintains that the motion is not a personal attack on Om Birla but a defense of the institution. MP Sukhdeo Bhagat clarified that the Chair must function according to the Constitution and not as an extension of the government. “We want fairness and impartiality; these are the two words we stand for,” he asserted.
