Jamshedpur, April 5 : The students of B.A. (IIIrd year) from the Department of Geography, L.B.S.M. College, Jamshedpur, participated in their educational Excursion to CSIR- National Metallurgical Laboratory.
They visited the facility of Mineral Processing (MNP) Division led by their faculty Dr. Kanchan Mala, Dr. R. K. Choudhary, Raj Kumar Sen, A. K. Singh, Shobha Devi, NituWala . Dr. Ratnakar Singh, Chief Scientist & Head, MNP Division presented an introductory talk on Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, CSIR- National Metallurgical Laboratory and the activity of Mineral Processing in the Division. He deliberated on process of developing Mineral concentrate for metallurgical extraction and research related to it.
Dr. M. K. Mohanta, Senior Principal Scientist, demonstrated about earth processes leading to dynamic land mass formation in geological time scale through plate tectonics, rock formation (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic) and metallogenic concentration by audio-visual.
The metallogenic provinces of Singhbhum and Karnataka and Rajasthan of 2500 million years old holding potential deposits were formed by plate tectonic process. He explained about basics of mineral, ore and gangue and demonstrated with hand specimens and how they appear under microscope. He also demonstrated with satellite imageries on topographic features, forest cover, cultivated land, Dam and irrigated area and explained how it can be used for land use planning, urban planning etc.
Sunati Mohanty, Scientist showed them Bench scale and Pilot scale facility for developing beneficiation and process flowsheet development. Dr. R. K. Rath, Principal Scientist and Sunati Mohanty demonstrated gravity separation of chromite tailings by tabling.
