Civic bodies press panic button to clean clogged drains

Jamshedpur, July 1: Concerned over protests from residents and with monsoon picking up in the city, local civic bodies have started cleaning of clogged drains to prevent water logging in residential areas.

Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) has embarked on a drive to clear as many as 39 big drains falling under their command area with a deadline of completing the cleaning within a week.As many as 100 workers have been pressed into service.

JNAC special officer Prabhat Kumar said :� We have issued orders to engage private contractors for cleaning of big drains. The contractors have been asked to engage as many workers as possible for cleaning of the drains. On the first phase we would clean nine drains and gradually all the 39 drains will be cleaned of garbage and debris.

We will also submit a report to the district administration on the nearly 10 big drains to be cleaned by corporate houses�.

Drains at Shastrinagar, Ramjanamnagar in Kadma, ACC Flats in Kadma, Bhatia Basti in Kadma, Bhuiyandih, Baridih, Cable Town (in Golmuri), Nirmal Nagar in Sonari have been cleaned.

The JNAC official also agreed that they have written letter to Tata Steel and Jusco for cleaning of drains carrying effluents of companies (around 10 such big drains) which passes through congested residential areas.

This time administration is planning to take preventive measures pre-hand so that horrors of the flood are not repeated. The administration is working on plans to ensure safety and better flood management system during the monsoon season.

�Though the rains in the city have been normal this time but we are working on a strategy to coordinate in such a way that the there is no negative impact of rains in the city. We will also streamline the functioning of Disaster Management Cell,� said an official.

The East Singhbhum administration has also decided to open up a control room that will coordinate with different agencies working to check the effects of incessant rains. � We are taking preventive measures as this time we are not going to take any chances but steps are being taken to prepare an action plan to combat flood situation.

All the notified area committees will supervise the operations in their jurisdictions while the control room will keep in touch with them,� said a district official.

Mango Notified Area Committee (MNAC) newly appointed special officer, Sanjay Kumar Pandey, said has also launched a cleanliness drive.MNAC) special officer also informed that they would organise camps on all Sundays in different localities of Mango to sort out pension, voter card and other basic amenities related issues faced by the residents .
