Jamshedpur: The city is immersed in festive cheer as Christmas draws near, with church choirs, community groups, and residents coming together to celebrate the season of joy, giving, and togetherness. Across Jamshedpur and the nearby area, churches are being decked up, carol rehearsals are underway, and preparations for midnight masses are in full swing.
For many, Christmas is not just a religious celebration but also a time for spreading joy and connecting with the community. “It is the time of the year when college students come together and go house to house caroling. It is the sheer joy of coming together, which is very healthy. Even though we are stressed in our lives, this activity of singing brings smiles and helps us forget all our problems. It brings colours to the festivities,” says Simon D’souza, a young professional participating in carol singing.
The Bishop House at Golmuri is being meticulously decorated, with more than 500 people expected to gather on Christmas Day. Churches across the city, including St Mary’s Church in Bistupur, Beldih Baptist Church in Northern Town, and St Anthony’s Church in Parsudih, are preparing for elaborate midnight prayers, ensuring every detail—from lighting to decorations—reflects the spirit of the season.
St Mary’s Church officials said that a special tableau of Jesus Christ will be created for the occasion, allowing visitors to experience the story of Christmas through a beautifully arranged display. Candles will be lit by people from all sections of the community, creating a serene and festive atmosphere that underscores unity and faith.
The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) also emphasized the evolving role of Santa Claus in modern celebrations. “The society at large is confronting various problems across different streams, and there is no harm in employing Santa Claus for a greater cause,” said a YMCA member, highlighting how Santa’s presence can bring joy, especially to children and the underprivileged, while reinforcing the values of giving.
During the last week of December, Santa Claus—typically depicted as a plump, jolly, white-bearded man dressed in a red coat with white collars and cuffs, red trousers, and black boots—can be seen at popular city locations, wishing residents a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year while distributing chocolates to children and pedestrians.
With churches echoing the sounds of carols, homes illuminated with fairy lights, and community spaces adorned for celebration, Jamshedpur is once again ready to welcome Christmas with open arms, reminding everyone that the season is about joy, compassion, and togetherness.
