Chatra Highway Blocked for 16 Hours: SUV Runs Over 4 Minors

Chatra (IANS): A pall of gloom has descended over the Piparwar region in Chatra after four teenage boys died in a horrific road accident late Thursday evening. Outraged villagers have blocked the highway for over 16 hours, halting coal transportation and regular traffic to demand justice and compensation.

The Fatal Collision

The accident occurred at Chiraiyatand when a speeding Scorpio SUV allegedly struck a motorcycle carrying four minors. The impact was so severe that both vehicles were mangled.

• On-site Casualties: Vikas Kumar (15), Manjit Mahto (14), and Pratap Kumar (15) died instantly.

• Fourth Fatality: Son Kumar (15) succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to RIMS, Ranchi.

The boys, residents of Baradih and Hafuwa villages, were returning home from Khalari when the tragedy struck.

Villagers Demand Accountability

Since Thursday night, grieving families and local residents have staged a sit-in at the accident site, refusing to hand over the bodies for post-mortem until their demands are met. The protesters are calling for:

• Immediate arrest of the Scorpio driver.

• Adequate compensation and government jobs for the victims’ families.

• Strict measures to curb reckless driving by heavy vehicles in the coal belt.

Administrative Response

The blockade has left hundreds of coal trucks and passenger vehicles stranded in long queues. While Piparwar police and senior officials have offered compensation as per government norms, the villagers have remained steadfast. A heavy police presence remains on the scene as authorities attempt to negotiate an end to the 16-hour standoff.
