Palamu: A protest by truck drivers against the hit-and-run law in Chhatarpur, Palamu district, Jharkhand, took a violent turn on Tuesday (January 9), lasting for about 10 hours and resulting in widespread chaos. The agitated drivers blocked the national highway during the protest, pelting stones at the police and causing considerable disruption.
Former Member of Parliament (MP) and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) were among those caught in the traffic jam caused by the protest. The situation escalated as the drivers, purportedly under the influence of alcohol, engaged in aggressive behavior. The road blockade, which lasted from 8 am for about 10 hours, caused severe inconvenience for local residents, including school children and even ambulances.
Reports suggest that the protesters attacked the police, injuring at least four officers and two guards of the former MP. The drivers, in a state of fury, chased the police away multiple times during the course of the protest. Numerous buses had their glass panes broken in the ensuing chaos.
The protest, initially aimed at expressing discontent with the hit-and-run law, escalated into a violent confrontation between the drivers and law enforcement. The situation highlights the challenges authorities face in managing and de-escalating such incidents, as well as the potential risks posed by intoxicated individuals during protests.
