Jamshedpur: Railways Ramps Up Surveillance to End Train Delays

Jamshedpur: Facing intense public pressure, the Railway administration has launched a crackdown on persistent train delays across the Chakradharpur Division. Authorities have introduced stepped-up enforcement and infrastructure upgrades, promising a visible boost in punctuality soon.

Senior officials met with MLA Saryu Roy at his protest site on Tuesday, admitting that delays have severely inconvenienced passengers at Tatanagar Railway Station. Officials assured the public that the administration is working around the clock to restore normal service.

Round-the-Clock Monitoring Launched

In a major operational shift, the Railways has initiated 24/7 real-time surveillance of all passenger train movements. This monitoring allows dispatchers to identify bottlenecks instantly and make faster decisions to reduce incremental delays.

While staff remain engaged in 24-hour operations, officials noted that ongoing infrastructure expansion and technical constraints temporarily hinder punctuality. They are currently addressing these issues as top priorities.

Solving the Tatanagar Bottleneck

Limited platform capacity at Tatanagar station—which currently uses only two platforms for Kharagpur-bound traffic and three for Adityapur-bound traffic—remains a primary challenge.

To resolve this, the Railways is implementing several strategic fixes:

  • Third-Line Connectivity: Recent works at Santragachi and Adityapur have enabled third-line access from Asanboni to Salgajuri. Upcoming work at Tatanagar will eventually extend this third line all the way to Jharsuguda.

  • Loop Line Expansion: Crews are expanding loop lines at Birajpur, Sini, Kandra, Haldipokhar, and Biribans to allow for smoother train crossings and overtakes.

  • New Platforms: A proposal for an additional platform at Tatanagar aims to eliminate the unscheduled stops frequently forced upon trains at Gamharia and Adityapur.

The Road Ahead: Freight Corridors and New Trains

The upcoming Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), stretching 1,868 km from Dankuni to Surat, represents the most significant long-term solution. Once freight trains shift to these dedicated tracks, the existing lines will serve passenger trains exclusively.

Additionally, the Railways has added 24 new coaching trains to the Tatanagar section over the last three years to meet rising demand. While officials expect some delays to persist during construction, they urge commuters to remain patient as these mega-projects move toward completion.
