Chakradharpur Citizens Threaten City Bandh Over Chronic Train Delays

Chakradharpur: Public resentment against deteriorating railway services is reaching a breaking point in Chakradharpur. Under the banner of the ‘Janata Rail Andolan,’ local citizens, commuters, and social organizations have launched a formal protest against the railway administration, serving a one-week ultimatum to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM).

The protesters highlighted that train services across the Chakradharpur Division—including Tatanagar and Adityapur—are severely disrupted. Chronic delays are now directly impacting the region’s employment, education, and healthcare sectors.

Daily Commute Paralyzed by Delays

Local residents report that both passenger and express trains are running several hours behind schedule daily. This persistent unpunctuality has:

• Disrupted Livelihoods: Office-goers are unable to reach their workplaces on time.

• Impacted Education: Students are missing classes due to unreliable transport.

• Delayed Healthcare: Patients traveling to major cities for urgent medical attention face life-threatening delays.

The 4-Point Charter of Demands

The representatives of ‘Janata Rail Andolan’ submitted a formal memorandum to the DRM, outlining four non-negotiable demands:

1. Punctual Passenger Trains: Immediate restoration of the schedule for local passenger services.

2. End Express Delays: Total elimination of unpunctuality in express train operations.

3. Transparency: Public disclosure of the specific reasons behind recurring delays.

4. Gate Accessibility: Keeping the railway crossing gate near the station open 24/7 or providing an immediate alternative route to ease local traffic.

One-Week Ultimatum

The agitators have made it clear that if the administration fails to take concrete action within seven days, the protest will escalate. Proposed actions include:

• A call for a total Chakradharpur Bandh.

• A massive Dharna (sit-in protest) outside the DRM office.
