Chaibasa’s Vijay Sundi strikes gold at World Para Archery Series in Bangkok

Jamshedpur: In a moment of immense pride for Jharkhand and the nation, Indian para archer Vijay Sundi delivered a stellar performance at the World Para Archery Series 2026 Leg-1, clinching a gold medal in the men’s recurve team event.
Representing India for the first time at this prestigious tournament held in Bangkok from March 29 to April 5, Sundi, along with his teammate Harvinder Singh, defeated Chinese Taipei 6–2 in the final to secure the top podium finish.
Continuing their remarkable run, Sundi also excelled in the mixed team event. Partnering with Bhavna, the Indian duo clinched the bronze medal after a nail-biting contest against Slovenia.
The match ended in a 4–4 tie, leading to a shoot-off where India edged past with a score of 10.9 against Slovenia’s 9.8.

Individually, Sundi showcased exceptional consistency and precision.
He scored 323 points in the first 70-meter round and 318 in the second, aggregating 641 points—an outstanding performance that earned him the top rank in the series so far.
Celebrations erupted at the Turtung Archery Training Centre in Sikursai, Chaibasa, where coaches and fellow trainees lauded his historic achievement.

His coach, Maharshi Mahendra Sinku, emphasized that success in archery demands relentless hard work, discipline, and mental strength.
He praised Sundi’s sharp focus, presence of mind, and refined shooting technique, expressing confidence that he will soon represent India at major events like the Asian Para Games and the Paralympics.
Sundi’s achievement drew widespread praise from eminent personalities, including Arjun Munda, former Union minister and President of the Archery Association of India, Purnima Mahato, along with several sports officials, administrators, and members of the archery fraternity.
With this historic victory, Vijay Sundi has not only brought glory to Jharkhand but has also strengthened India’s position on the global para archery stage.
