Seraikela, August 8: On the eve of World Tribal Day to be celebrated on August 9, Congress district general secretary Sushen Mardi issued a press statement urging all tribal communities of the world to unite and fight for their rights. Drawing attention of world governments to the need of eradicating tribal problems, Sushen Mardi traced the history of the institution of World Tribal Day after lengthy rounds of deliberations convened by the United Nations Organization.
The conditions of tribal communities around the world were reviewed at the Rio de Janeiro conference in Brazil. After detailed discussions a motion was passed in 1993 during the 111th session of the Working Group, on the recognition of the Tribal Rights Declaration draft and August 9 was declared as World Tribal Day. Everyone unanimously accepted the language, culture of the tribals and their fundamental rights.
He said that the first Tribal Day was organized by the UNO in Geneva in 1994. He mentioned in the press note, “There is no greater opportunity than this in organizing the tribals. SI urge all the tribals on World Tribal Day to forget caste barriers and be a united voice for our rights, our culture and our history. On 9th August, on the occasion of World Tribal Day, light a lamp of unity and light in every tribal home. Organize tribal seminars, meetings and conferences to exhibit our traditions and values as we constitute the heritage of civilization.”
