Jamshedpur: To prevent ragging incidents, 58 CCTV cameras have been installed at the male and female hostels of MGM Medical College. The installation comes after multiple complaints of ragging and disturbances over the past four months prompted the district administration and college authorities to take stringent measures.

The male hostel has been equipped with 42 high-definition cameras, while 16 cameras have been installed at the female hostel. These cameras are strategically placed at the hostel premises, including verandas, common areas, and the main entrance, to ensure comprehensive monitoring. The installation is 80% complete, with the remaining work expected to conclude soon.

College Principal Dr. Diwakar Hansda emphasized the importance of regular surveillance, stating, “The responsibility of monitoring these cameras has been entrusted to a designated staff member. This step aims to ensure a safer environment and curb incidents of ragging effectively.”

Past incidents of ragging had revealed gaps in the surveillance system, as the existing CCTV cameras were insufficient to identify and hold culprits accountable. In response, the college administration decided to expand the network, enhancing its capacity to investigate and prevent such incidents.

The district administration had also recommended the installation of additional cameras to address the recurring complaints. “These cameras are not just about monitoring but also serve as a deterrent to prevent any untoward activity in the hostels,” said an official familiar with the matter.

The hostels’ main gates and pathways have been prioritized for camera placement, ensuring incidents outside the immediate hostel buildings can also be tracked. This comprehensive coverage is expected to provide evidence in case of any future disturbances.

The principal assured that the new system would bring significant improvements in maintaining discipline. “With this enhanced surveillance, we are confident that ragging incidents will be controlled, and students will feel more secure in the hostels,” he added.

MGM Medical College has faced repeated complaints of ragging in recent months, leading to unrest and disciplinary concerns. The enhanced CCTV network is seen as a crucial step in creating a safer environment for students.
