Jamshedpur: In a brazen act of violence, a 55-year-old businessman, Sanjay Burman, was shot at by two bike-borne assailants near his shop at Kandra Market in the Seraikela-Kharsawan district on Saturday afternoon. The shooting occurred in broad daylight after Burman reportedly refused to give in to an extortion demand made earlier.
The victim, who owns a cement and hardware store in the bustling Kandra market area, sustained two bullet injuries—one in his left leg and another in the left thigh. He was rushed to Tata Main Hospital, where he is currently undergoing surgery.
Binod Kumar Murmu, Officer-in-Charge of Kandra Thana, confirmed that the motive behind the attack was extortion. “The criminals had demanded money, which the businessman refused to pay. The attack followed soon after. We are scanning CCTV footage from the area and have some leads based on the extortion call received by the victim,” he said.
The police are awaiting a formal statement from Burman once his medical condition stabilizes. Meanwhile, an investigation team is working to track the shooters, and local sources suggest that the police may have already identified suspects based on the call records.
The incident has once again raised questions over public safety and police preparedness in the region. Despite ongoing efforts by Seraikela-Kharsawan SP Mukesh Lunayat to curb criminal activities, the boldness of the attack—carried out in daylight in a busy commercial area—has sent shockwaves among local traders and residents.
Authorities have assured swift action and increased patrolling in sensitive zones. Business associations in the area are also expected to meet local officials to demand tighter security.
