Blackout in Jamshedpur after failure in DVC grid

Jamshedpur, September 20: Blackouts in three phases hit Jamshedpur due to a grid fault between Tata Steel, Tata Steel UISL, and Tata Power, plunging the entire city into darkness. The power outage, which began around 7 PM, affected key installations, including several Tata Steel plants, Tata Main Hospital (TMH) and residential areas of the city.

Efforts were underway by Tata Steel UISL to stabilize the power supply. Although alternative power arrangements quickly restored electricity in Tata Steel, TMH, and other hospitals, the cause of the outage remained unclear.

Soon after the blackout social media was flooded with pictures claiming that electricity failure was due to a blast in one of the Tata Steel’s blast furnaces.

Tata Steel UISL in its official communique said, “We are aware of the power blackout currently affecting parts of Jamshedpur, caused by an issue in DVC Grid at Jamshedpur. Most part of the city has been restored. The Tata Steel UISL team has taken immediate action to address the situation.”

The press release further read that power supply to following area including Bistupur, ⁠Northern town area, CH Area has been restored.

Tata Steel in it’s press release said, “As part of our emergency management protocols, we initiated the safe blow down of the blast furnace, released gases, and took immediate steps to refire the furnace.”

The official communique read, “We would like to clarify that there is no fire at Jamshedpur Works. All actions were taken in line with our standard safety procedures to ensure the safety of equipment and the community.”

The company further said, “Today evening, Tata Main Hospital (TMH) experienced a brief power outage, which was promptly restored. Hospital operations were unaffected due to the power backup system in place. All functions remain fully operational, and the electricity has been restored. TMH is functioning normally.”
