BJP Mango Unit Protests Against Holding Tax Hike

Jamshedpur: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mango Division, under the leadership of President Binod Rai, staged a protest against the Jharkhand government’s decision to hike holding taxes. A delegation submitted a formal memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of East Singhbhum, demanding an immediate rollback of the increased rates.

In the letter, the BJP highlighted that the state government’s new calculation system has resulted in a 15% to 20% increase in holding taxes across all municipal bodies, including the Mango Municipal Corporation (MMC).

Tax Hike Labelled as “Economic Exploitation”

BJP Mango President Binod Rai stated that this decision places an extreme financial burden on the common citizens. The hike directly affects thousands of residents, including families living in flats, owners of permanent and semi-permanent houses, small shopkeepers, showroom operators, and middle-class businessmen.

The memorandum criticized the timing of the hike, pointing out the “pathetic” condition of basic infrastructure in Mango. It noted that residents do not receive adequate water supply, roads, electricity, or drainage facilities from the Municipal Corporation.

“Imposing such a heavy tax increase despite the lack of basic amenities is equivalent to the exploitation and injustice of the common public,” the memorandum read.

Severe Water Crisis in Mango

The BJP also brought the administration’s attention to the worsening water crisis in the region as temperatures rise. The party reported that residents are struggling for every drop of water, with daily wage labourers forced to spend their mornings searching for water instead of working.

“It is deeply distressing to see small children abandoning their studies to arrange water for their households,” the BJP leaders noted. The party urged the administration to prioritize a permanent solution to the water supply issue, as residents are currently facing both a resource shortage and an increased financial burden.

The delegation, which included several local workers and residents, demanded that the Jharkhand government immediately reconsider the tax hike to provide relief to the people of Mango.
