Ranchi, Sept 25: A two-day national workshop on ‘Advanced Thin Film Deposition and Characterization Techniques,’ sponsored by ANRF-SERB, was organized at Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, Ranchi. The workshop aimed to provide comprehensive insights into modern thin film deposition methods, advanced surface engineering and analytical characterization techniques.
The inaugural session was graced by BIT Mesra Vice Chancellor Prof. Indranil Manna, Dean of Faculty Affairs Prof. Ashok Sharan, Head of the Department of Physics Dr. R.K. Sinha and Chief Guest Prof. Manish Roy (NIT Jamshedpur and retired DRDO scientist). The organizing team comprised Dr. Rishi Sharma (Convener), Dr. Sanat Kumar Mukherjee (Co-Convener), and Dr. S.K. Dhiman (Organizing Secretary).
The workshop featured expert lectures and hands-on training on cutting-edge deposition systems, including magnetron sputtering, microwave and RF-PECVD and hot filament CVD. Sessions also covered advanced analytical techniques like XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and AFM. Renowned speakers included Prof. J.D. Majumdar (IIT Kharagpur), Dr. Trilok Singh (IIT Delhi), Prof. Hari Om Yadav (NIT Delhi), Prof. S.K. Sinha (BIT Mesra) and Prof. G.P. Singh (CUJ Ranchi), among others.
Participants also received practical exposure through laboratory sessions and a visit to the Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF). The workshop fostered academic collaboration and knowledge-sharing among neighboring institutions, including Ranchi University, St. Xavier’s College, and the Central University of Jharkhand, thereby strengthening research in materials science and engineering at BIT Mesra.
