Jamshedpur: Bhasha Shahid Diwas was celebrated in the city on Friday under the aegis of Jharkhand Banga Bhashi Samanvaya Samiti.
Tributes were paid to the 11 martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Bengali language in Silchar district of Asom in the year 1961.
Presiding over the programme, the outfit president Bikas Mukherjee said the time had come when Bengali-speaking people needed to launch a movement for their mother tongue the way it was done in As om. He said the mother tongue was like mother�s milk, most essential for a person�s overall development.
Another outfit member Nepal Das spoke on the history of Bengali in Jharkhand.
Among others present on the occasion included Babulal Chakraborty, Chandan Dutta, Sandeep Sinha Choudhary, Chitrodeep Bhattacharjee, Pradyut Ghatuari, Poorbi Ghosh, Aseem Dey, Rishikesh Ghosh, Anoop Kumar Majumdar and Vani Prasad Mukherjee.
