Banna Gupta meets family of chain snatching victim

Jamshedpur : A day after 36-year-old woman was shot dead by two scooty-borne criminals at adjoining BH Area under Kadma police station area the morning walkers at Kadma-Sonari Link road State Agriculture Minister Banna Gupta met her family and assured of all help.

The criminals attacked the victim identified as Nazneen Pervez after making an abortive bid to snatch her gold-chain while she was returning home at Dhatkidh from the walk at the Joggers’ Park located along the Kadma-Sonari Link Road in Kadma. The victim, who was wife of Pervez Ashraf, a transporter, was a resident of Hussain Manzil on Sonar Line in Dhatkidih. Banna said that he will make sure that the culprits and nabbed soon.

Meanwhile, the police are yet to catch the culprits behind the attack. Police say that only few women report chain-snatching incidents. Most of them go unreported. “We have alerted all the police stations across the city in view of the growing reports of chain snatching. Police have upped their vigil, especially in vulnerable areas in the evenings,” said an official.

Superintendent of police (city) Karthik S, said that the murder took place due to the chain-snatching by the armed criminals. The criminals shot her as she protested the snatching.. He said they are trying to detect the criminals involved in the ghastly incident, expressing his hope that they will be able to find out the assailants soon.

In the wake of sudden surge observed in the snatching cases, especially amongst the women, residents of the city are perturbed over the issue from the past few weeks.

According to police sources, most of the youths involved in the incidents of chain or purse snatching are drug addicts. They adopt different types of modus operandi — either a youth snatches the purse or a chain in lonely places, or engages the victim in a conversation and commit the crime.

Officials say that these chain snatchers use special tools and customised motorcycles. Special pliers are used to cut chains. Many boost the engine power of their bike by fitting imported carburetors and quick action throttles.
